Matchbox Cafe, located in Wellington House, Abington Street, was founded by Bing Wan in April 2018.
As an experienced chef of three decades, who has worked in all kinds of food establishments including the town centre’s former Chicago Rock Cafe, Bing took on a new challenge with Matchbox.
The owner’s love for food was nurtured from an early age, with his parents having owned a takeaway, and he has put that experience to good use in the cafe over the past eight years.
The quirky and homely cafe has an open kitchen to allow staff to engage with customers who want to chat – and this has enabled Bing and his team to build bonds with loyal visitors.
Having spoken to the Chronicle & Echo around the time of Matchbox Cafe’s sixth anniversary, Bing believed it was his commitment to individuals, organisations and businesses that contributed to the success of the venue – and that community spirit epitomises the cafe.

The post explained that the business is coming towards the end of its lease, which presents an exciting opportunity for a new owner to continue building its well-established reputation among a loyal daily customer base.
The takeover would include a hassle-free set up for an owner-operator wanting to take the keys and make a profit from day one. A 100 percent turnkey deal means it will include all the commercial espresso machinery, kitchen equipment, refrigeration, seating, and everything needed to get up and running.
Bing also says it is ideal timing for an incoming owner to agree a brand new, long-term lease directly with the landlord, and there is growth potential through extended opening hours, expanded menus, and moving to the use of delivery apps.
