A plan is underway to build a multi-storey 1,300 space car park for Northampton's railway station "in the not-too-distant future".

Northampton Forward unveiled the next steps of its "masterplan" for the town on Friday as it announced it's bid for a £12.2m fund to transform the market square.And, after first promising the scheme in its 2015 Conservative manifesto, Northampton Borough Council unveiled its first artist's impression for the multi-storey off St Andrews Road.

He said: "This development has been a long-time coming as it is difficult to negotiate with national organisations.

"The current single-storey car park is ancient and not fit for purpose, simply because there is far greater demand for spaces.

"Our major consideration is to bring this about with as little disruption as possible and will be developed alongside the existing parking rather than disrupting it.

"It should be coming out of the ground in the not-too-distant future."

It comes after the council first promised the multi-storey car park in its Conservative manifesto in 2015.

Meanwhile, the conference also revealed plans for the newly-titled "Four Waterside" development in a space off St Peter's Way, less than a minute's walk away from the station.

It includes plans for a 125-bed hotel and 60,000 square foot of grade-A office space.

Interim head of paid service George Candler said: "As far as grade-A office space goes there really isn't anything like this in Northampton.

"We have tested the appetite in the market in our leisure study and we know there's demand for more hotel space in a town centre location.

"We are developing a business case that we are taking to the Enterprise Zone board this summer."
