Meet the passionate business owner hoping to bring ‘a corner of Italy’ to Northampton
Meet the passionate business owner hoping to bring “a corner of Italy” to Northampton, by offering homemade food in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Michela Petrone is the founder and owner of The Italian Corner, a cafe-restaurant which opened in St Leonard’s Road just a few weeks ago.
“I have a great passion for food and I learned to cook by watching my mother,” Michela told Chronicle & Echo.
“In Italy, I worked in bars and gelaterias for several years, making fresh gelato and cakes, and preparing many cappuccinos where I learned small simple designs that I now bring to my cafe.”

Michela would have loved to have found a business like hers in Northampton and decided to fill the gap in the market by creating it herself.
The Italian Corner is a cosy and authentic cafe, where everything is prepared fresh every day. The focaccias and sandwiches are made with high quality Italian cold cuts, and there are also pastries, croissants, Sicilian cannoli and much more on offer.
“Visitors can expect true Italian flavours, generous portions and a warm, family-like atmosphere,” said Michela. “We also try to make every customer feel special. We often thank them by leaving a little heart or their name on a cappuccino or latte.”
Michela was asked what feedback she has received from the Northampton community, and what they like most about what she has created.

“The response from the Northampton community has been truly amazing,” she said. “People appreciate the Italian cuisine I prepare, and our most loved items are cappuccinos, lattes and rich, creamy hot chocolates.”
Michela believes customers value the cleanliness of the modern yet chic environment, the prices, and the freshness and quality of the food – but above all else, it is the passion and care that the team puts into every detail.
She said: “Many tell us that our cafe reminds them of Italy or brings back fond memories. This support keeps them coming back and motivates us to do even better every day.
“What makes The Italian Corner special is its authenticity and attention to detail. Everything is prepared following traditional Italian recipes, with fresh, high quality ingredients.
“People come for a simple coffee and a creamy cappuccino, to have a chat with a friend, to shop for a product they need, for a healthy lunch break, or for a sweet Italian-style breakfast.”
Michela admits that opening a business during this period “was not easy” but she was led by her passion for food and making people feel at home.
“With commitment, dedication, and love for what we do, it’s possible to create something special even in a challenging time for the hospitality industry,” she said. “My message to the Northampton community is to keep supporting local businesses, as they bring life, heart and authenticity to the town.”
As well as continuing to grow The Italian Corner, Michela looks forward to introducing cuzzetiello – which she describes as a special Neapolitan fast food and tradition. This will be among other fresh Italian specialties and traditional sweet treats to come.
