The supermarket giant has drawn up proposals, including a 129-space car park and an in-store bakery, which it hopes to submit to Northampton Borough Council by the end of the year.

Since Chronicle & Echo shared a story about the plans last week, readers have been sharing their views.

For the most part, social media commenters are happy to see a supermarket planned for the area as a lunch option for industrial estate workers.

One commenter posted: “Actually a sensible location for once. It would also give other food options for workers at Lodge Farm for lunch.”

Others said: “It makes total sense”, “good idea” and “despite there being 'too many supermarkets' this one will be very convenient for Duston.”

However a lot of readers also shared concerns about the busy junction the store would be located on.

One commenter said: “Those traffic lights are extremely dangerous!

“If a large vehicle is waiting to turn into Lodge Farm from town all oncoming traffic in the inside lane is blocked from view.

“This will definitely have to be changed if no one is to lose their life at this atrociously badly designed junction.

“I would welcome the store but the lights will need serious consideration before anything is decided.”

Another added: “Good idea but the traffic lights need to put a roundabout in.

“This would slow the traffic down more and make it safer.”

Another commented: “Need Firsview Drive, Harlestone traffic lights to go back to proper filter lights, especially with the increase of people crossing or turning into Lodge Farm.”

A spokeswoman for Lidl said: "We will be working closely with the local council and the highways department, to ensure that our proposals meet the requirements for the area and will address any concerns should they arise.

"We look forward to sharing any further updates with the local community as soon as we are in a position to do so."

Although some residents pointed out that there is already a Lidl not too far away in Sixfields, others welcomed the proposals with their minds on employment.

Residents can share their views with Lidl on its Harlestone Road public consultation website, found here.
