We are lucky to have so many wonderful and innovative businesses in our town, who continue to fight through times of uncertainty and financial hardship to serve their community.
It takes something truly special to withstand the test of time, and the following seven businesses have impressively built loyal customer bases that stand by them through thick and thin.
And that includes me, as I see the hard work, dedication and innovation that these business owners display and I follow them closely as a loyal customer myself. So let’s take a look…

5. The Eccentric Englishman
The Eccentric Englishman, a quirky establishment known for its afternoon teas, cocktails and themed events in St Giles’ Street, first opened in September 2021. The business has recently undergone massive changes to focus on events, event planning and creating cakes and desserts for special occasions. Liz Cox is one of the most down-to-earth business owners I have met, and her cheesecake remains unbeaten in my books. Photo: The Eccentric Englishman

6. Duston Village Bakery
Duston Village Bakery, located in Main Road, recently celebrated its 100th birthday and has been run by Jenni Smith since the start of 2012. Jenni, who puts the community at the heart of everything she does, has worked at the bakery for around 35 years and began as a Saturday girl. Her sweet treats, particularly the snowman-themed donuts at Christmas time, and her pies are a family favourite in our household. Photo: Katie Wheatley

7. Nails Boutique by KM
Cristina Mihalache and Nicu Staicu run Nails Boutique by KM and The Man Cave respectively from the same premises in Kettering Road. The pair saw the perfect opportunity to start this joint venture at the end of 2023. I love going to Cristina for her high quality nail treatments. She is highly experienced with meticulous attention to detail, having trained 12 years ago and worked in the industry full-time for the past six years. Photo: Nails Boutique by KM

8. Luxe at Bell
Family-run business Luxe at Bell has offered a mixture of quality gifts, cookware and homeware from within A Bell in Kingsthorpe Road since 2022. As a frequent visitor of the store, I know the items are carefully selected and the team continues to stock items that their customers truly want. You can continue your trip by visiting the on-site cafe at the home and lifestyle store, Love Lunch at Bell. Photo: Luxe at Bell
