I went to the reopening of a renovated shop on a Northants high street – there’s hope for the business community
I went to the reopening of a renovated shop on a Northamptonshire high street and it reinforced there is a hope for the business community at what is proving to be a difficult time.
It is heartwarming to see that Louise Miller-Chalk, founder of luxury homeware brand Miller & Chalk, has committed to staying on Watling Street at the heart of Towcester.
The soft furnishings span feather cushions, made-to-measure curtains and blinds, table linen and blankets – and Louise is the mastermind behind the meticulous attention-to-detail that goes into creating the products.
The journey began in 2016 when Louise launched the business under the name ‘Gracie Lu’ selling luxury pet products. Four years later, in 2020, she rebranded to Miller & Chalk.

Since then, Louise has brought her vision to life by building her business’ online presence and loyal social media following.
Miller & Chalk opened a pop-up shop for the first time on Watling Street for a week in August last year, and the independent took the opportunity again for just under two months in the run up to Christmas 2025.
The shop launched at the start of November and Louise planned to remain open until four days before Christmas, following an amazing response from the Northamptonshire community the first time around.
Louise threw everything into running the pop-up shop for the second time and after it was met with success once again, she faced the tough decision about whether to continue the journey at 213 Watling Street.

Lucky enough for customers across the county and beyond, the founder decided to stay and commit to Towcester’s high street – and reopened on Valentine’s Day after refurbishing the shop to make it everything she dreamed of.
Miller & Chalk is now back with a fresh look, new products on the shelves and with workshops and pop-ups planned with her favourite small businesses, to support others in getting their products on the high street too.
I popped into Miller & Chalk on February 14 to see how Louise’s vision came to life, and it was everything you would expect from the brand.
With a fresh lick of paint and new flooring to reflect the vibe of the products she proudly sells, as well as furniture to display what they could look like in customers’ homes, Miller & Chalk is a fantastic addition to Towcester’s high street.

I know how hard Louise worked to bring everything together in the nick of time and this independent business deserves your support as it embarks on a new journey with a permanent bricks and mortar store.
Having seen the number of independent business closures across Northampton and beyond in what has been a bleak start to 2026, you have to commend Louise’s bravery in taking a risk to make her dreams come true.
If you are local to Towcester or are looking for a new high street to explore in this county, be sure to pay Miller & Chalk a visit when it is open from Wednesday to Sunday. You will not be disappointed.
