Home security specialist from Northampton shares burglary prevention advice ahead of summer holiday season

A home security specialist and business owner from Northampton has shared his burglary prevention advice ahead of the summer holiday season.

Shaun Miller says many homes are unfortunately left vulnerable to opportunistic break-ins, which cause financial loss and a long-lasting emotional impact that can leave families feeling unsafe.

With the current cost of living pressures, many are putting home security improvements on hold and this can increase risk further – so Shaun wants to encourage Northampton residents to be proactive rather than reactive to an incident.

Shaun is the founder and owner of Viking Security Systems, which he launched in June 2021 a year after he lost his father. This experience encouraged him to change what he was doing and take the leap, having spent the past two decades in the industry.

Viking Security Systems is a family-run business working predominantly across Northamptonshire, and the team specialises in wired and wireless intruder alarms and CCTV for domestic and commercial properties.

The business, located near Boughton, is praised in reviews for the responsiveness to enquiries – with the majority of installations completed within a couple of weeks and any amendments within a couple of days.

“There are two times of the year burglaries occur more – the summer holidays and Christmas time when it gets darker,” said Shaun. “We get tons of calls when people come back off holiday and they’ve been burgled.

“Take more of a proactive approach rather than a reactive one. It’s not always about getting a security system fitted. You might have smart switches in your home to turn lamps on at certain times, or a security light if anyone approaches so it deters them away. An alarm system with an external sounder is the best deterrent you can have nowadays.”

Viking Security Systems is offering reduced-cost packages to help make home protection more affordable for families during the current economic climate.

The basic package wireless intruder alarm system costs a one-off payment of £550 including VAT, with no subscription fees.

“Other than the upkeep and maintenance, with batteries being replaced roughly every three years, this is low cost in comparison to if you were broken into,” said Shaun.

“We live in a throwaway society and most things can be replaced, but what you can’t replace is feeling safe in your home. Even after fitting alarm systems or CCTV, there are people who have not been able to stay in their properties and have to move.”

Small things, like ensuring your alarm box looks up-to-date, bringing your bins in, properties not being left in darkness, and ensuring post is properly stuck through letterboxes, make a bigger difference than you think.

“We’re growing at a steady rate and want to keep families safe in Northamptonshire,” Shaun concluded. “That’s been our goal from the off and that’s what we plan to continue.”
