A new Tesco Express is set to open in Abington Street next week, while the bigger Tesco Metro on the same street will close as part of a downsizing move by the company.

The smaller Tesco Express will open on Thursday, February 4, and the Tesco Metro will close on Wednesday, February 3, at 6pm.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We’re excited to be opening our new Northampton Express on Thursday February 4, helping to serve the local community at this difficult time.

"The safety of our customers and colleagues is our number one priority and we have been working hard to introduce the social distancing measures designed to keep everyone safe. We look forward to welcoming our first customers."

The address for the new Tesco Express is 13-15 Abington Street, which was formerly River Island, before the fashion retailer shut up shop and relocated to the Grosvenor Centre.

Tesco Metro will join several other of Northampton High Street's biggest units currently standing empty, including BHS, Marks & Spencer and Caffe Nero.

Tesco Metro opened in Abington Street on Monday, April 4, 2011, on the site of the former Woolworths store, and created 80 jobs.
