The former flagship store in Abington Street is making way for a new mixed development of homes, retail and leisure space.
In new images released this week, WNC gave an update on progress.
A spokesperson said: “The demolition of the former M&S building is almost complete, and deconstruction of the former Job Centre is well underway.
“The work is paving the way for a new scheme delivered by our development partner Capital & Centric to create hundreds of new homes alongside restaurants, bars, cafés, retail or leisure space and landscaped public spaces,” the spokesperson added.
Speaking last month, Councillor James Petter, cabinet member for local economy, culture and leisure at WNC, said: “Clearing these long-empty stores is a vital step towards creating a new chapter for Abington Street – paving the way for hundreds of homes, new shops, and leisure spaces as part of our regeneration plans. This is where the transformation truly begins.”
He also praised the work of contractors Colemans who had been working with the council to minimise disruption for residents and businesses, using secure hoarding, robotic demolition where needed and strict safety protocols across the project.
The scheme forms part of the council’s long-term strategy to revitalise the town centre.
The project opening is due to take place in summer 2032, according to WNC.
