New bar and restaurant moves closer to opening in prominent Northampton town centre location

A brand new bistro bar, restaurant, and takeaway has moved a step closer to opening at a prominent spot in Northampton town centre.

Plans were unveiled in May and later approved in June to convert the former Coleman's stationery shop on St Giles Street into a Greek Bistro.

New signage has recently been erected at the site, along with ongoing internal refurbishment. According to the plans, the bistro will feature a bar, restaurant, takeaway, and patisserie.

The site, located at the corner of St Giles Street and Castillian Street, has been empty since September 2023, when the previous real estate agency tenants closed down.

Once open, the bistro will join other successful independent businesses on St Giles Street, including Butterwick Bakery, Grandbies Cafe, Lawrence’s Bakery, The Velvet Room, Wig and Pen, Marmaris, Dreams Cafe, Saints Coffee, and more.

Coleman's had been trading from the site since 1977 but closed in 2021 after deciding not to renew their lease. In 2022, Strada, an independent real estate agency, moved into the vacant unit on a 10-year lease but shut down in late 2023 due to difficulties.

Previous plans to convert the site from retail into a takeaway were rejected by the council in 2022. However, the landlord successfully appealed, and the site is now cleared to operate as a takeaway.

The owners of the new Greek Bistro have been contacted for more information.
