Mayor praises Northampton curry house for supporting the community during pandemic

A local curry house has received praise from the new Mayor of Northampton during his first official engagement.

Councillor Brian Sargeant visited Saffron in Castilian Street as part of his first mayoral engagement.

Staff at the restaurant were praised for the ‘incredible’ work they have been doing during the pandemic, including delivery food to frontline workers in hospitals.

Cllr Sargeant said: “I would like to thank you for the incredible work you have done in our community since the beginning of the pandemic – you have gone above and beyond for those in need and our key workers, and for that I commend you.”

Saffron owner, Naz Islam, added: “It was wonderful to be able to welcome the Mayor down to the restaurant and we are truly humbled and privileged that he chose to visit us as his first official engagement.

“We look forward to hosting a charity night in aid of his chosen charity, The Lowdown, later in the year.”

Throughout lockdown, Saffron has offered NHS and emergency staff 50 percent off all collection orders, while free meals worth thousands of pounds have been donated to NHS staff and those in the most vulnerable ‘shielding’ categories.

The restaurant, which is now fully open with social distancing measures in place, has also celebrated members of the community who have gone above and beyond during the pandemic by awarding them with a year’s supply of curry, as well as donating produce to the Hope Centre and Northampton’s night shelter.

Naz continued: “The COVID-19 crisis has united our community and shown that when we do things for each other we all benefit.

“Cooking these meals for the staff at NGH was an absolute pleasure and we will continue to support them in any way we can as we slowly get back to normal.”
