EXCLUSIVE: Tesco Metro store to close in Northampton town centre in latest high street blow

Another store in Abington Street will stand empty as Tesco Metro is set to close its doors next year

Tesco Metro in Northampton town centre is shutting its doors and downsizing, it has been confirmed by a spokesman for the supermarket today (Monday).

After nine years in one of the town's main shopping streets, the store is now re-locating 'nearby' and will re-open next year as an Express store.

A Tesco spokesman told the Chronicle & Echo: “We have taken the decision to close our Northampton Metro store on Abington Street in February next year and re-locate to a new Express store nearby.

"We serve a fantastic community in Northampton and remain committed to the town.

"We are confident that the new Express will complement the seven Express stores and two Extras we have locally.

"Our priority over the coming months is to support our colleagues that are affected and we will offer alternative jobs within Tesco for those that wish to stay."

An update on where the new Express store will reopen is expected in the coming weeks.

It leaves other big units including BHS, Marks & Spencer, Thorntons, River Island and Caffe Nero left vacant in Abington Street.

Tesco Metro opened in Abington Street on Monday, April 4, 2011, on the site of the former Woolworths store, and created 80 jobs.
