In the memoir, Dennis opens up about the difficult experiences that shaped his youth including traumatic incidents that left a lasting impression.

One particularly impactful moment involved a surprise trip he thought would be to Waterloo Station.

“Without knowing what was happening I arrived at a social services home for neglected children. That was a traumatic experience experience I can never forget. As soon as a I realised where I was, I ran away.”

In the book he also reveals incidents such as never staying for school dinners because he had to sit alone. “People wouldn’t sit next to me as I was a neglected child so I never stayed for school dinners.” he said.

He credits his move to Northampton and meeting his wife as life-changing events that helped him rebuild his life and he went onto to become Mayor of Northampton at the age of 80.

His autobiography reveals his determination to turn his life around and to encourage young people facing difficulties that they can still turn their life around.

He says: “I wrote this book because I want to inspire young people facing difficult circumstances to believe in their potential and to show them that it is never too late to get on to a more constructive pathway in life.

Despite going through experiences I found traumatic, I went on to achieve many many things throughout my life I am proud of. That’s one of the reasons I wrote the book.”

The book was edited by a friend Peter Meredith and is now on sale on Amazon: My Life the way I see it by Dennis Meredith.
