One Voice compilation recorded by musicians during lockdown is released next week

Some of the best-known singer-songwriters and music groups from across the county will feature on a new compilation album which is released next week.

The One Voice collection brings together songs recorded during the coronavirus pandemic by nearly 30 acts including Billy Lockett, Greg Coulson and the Northampton Male Voice Choir.

The project has been put together by musician and producer Tommy Gardner, who in July appealed for performers interested in featuring on the compilation to get in touch.

He said: “The reaction from both the general community and the music scene to this project has been amazing.

“Every time I logged in to the One Voice email account there was more tracks waiting to be listened to. It was incredible to see everyone willing to get involved.

“The initial plan for this was to have around 10 to 12 tracks but that soon escalated into the brilliant line-up we have today.

“I’m very pleased with the mix of artists on this album. We have lots of solo artists, a few bands and even two choirs.”

The compilation also features Velvet Engine, That Joe Payne, the Ginger Pig Band, Amii Dawes, Green Leaves Down and Hazeyjane.

It will be available as a two-CD ‘digipak’ which will feature artwork donated by the performers.

Mr Gardner was inspired to put the compilation together after seeing performances online by groups and musicians who have been unable to play in venues because of the Coronavirus.

He said: “During lockdown I put together many collaborations with various artists and felt the music scene was more alive than ever, even if this was virtual.

“Every time I went on to social media there was always a singer, band or choirs performing by either posting videos or live streamed concerts.

“I think that those few months gave artists an opportunity to reach audiences that they may never have reached before all of this.

“As restrictions began to relax and the online music performances started to reduce, I thought it would be amazing to get a selection of the ‘lockdown’ performances together on album to create a lasting memory through music of that time.”

Proceeds from sales and online streams will be donated to the Northamptonshire Community Foundation which plans to us the money as part of its coronavirus response and recovery fund which helps community groups and vulnerable people.

The One Voice album is available from Monday, August 17.

Physical copies will be available online and in person at a location in Northampton town centre which is still to be confirmed.

Mr Gardner added: “For me, this album is for Northamptonshire and about creating a lasting memory.”

One Voice will also be available on streaming platforms at a future date.
