Waterway ambassadors, keen boaters and one of Britain’s most respected acting couples, Timothy West and Prunella Scales, will open the Northampton Festival of Water at Becket’s Park on the River Nene over the August Bank Holiday weekend. The launch ceremony will take place at noon on Saturday August 29.
Centred around the waterfront at Becket’s Park, the festival will have an array of attractions on and off the water providing a fun day out for all the family and will offer free entry with free parking in Northampton Borough Council multi-storey car parks and the event car park in Midsummer Meadow all weekend.
The Festival celebrates the 200th anniversary of the opening of the Northampton Canal Arm in 1815 and will feature a whole host of water and land based activities, with a trade show, exhibitions, talks, live music, comedy and dance, food and drink, children’s activities and rides as well as more than 100 boats of all shapes and sizes. There will also be opportunities for festivalgoers to get afloat on trip boats and water taxis.
Councillor Mary Markham, leader of Northampton Borough Council, said: “Northampton Borough Council is proud to sponsor the Festival of Water which is an important celebration of Northampton’s riverside and waterways. I hope as many people as possible are able to visit the festival and enjoy everything our fantastic waterways have to offer.”
