And the England flanker is now hoping his men can achieve their aim as they look to build on back-to-back Aviva Premiership wins.

Saints slayed Saracens 20-15 at Allianz Park last Saturday, backing up their 38-18 win against Worcester Warriors a week earlier.

They will now aim to win three league games in a row for the first time this season when Sale Sharks come calling at Franklin’s Gardens on Saturday.

And Wood recognises the importance of that win at Saracens as his men, who are currently fifth in the Premiership standings, look to push on in the coming weeks.

“It was a crucial result for us last weekend and perhaps the points meant a bit more to us than it did to them,” Wood said.

“It gets us right back up there.

“A couple of losses and we’d be down and almost out of it, but a couple of wins has meant we’re right back in the fight.

“We’ve said amongst ourselves it’s not about topping the table necessarily, it’s about being in the fight and peaking at the right times.

“We’ve perhaps been caught out with that in the past, topping the table, feeling like you’re invincible and then getting pipped in a semi-final, as we did to Saracens a couple of years ago at Allianz Park.

“We’ve got to make sure we’re peaking at the right time and hit the ground running at the end of the season.”
