Williams has his Exeter strike chalked off by dubious goals committee

Andy Williams' best efforts to claim Northampton's late equaliser at Exeter City as his own have failed to convince the EFL dubious goals committee, who've ruled it as an own goal.

Williams was adamant he got a touch on David Buchanan’s 90th minute corner to snatch a point for the Cobblers on Saturday, but replays showed the ball flew over his head and deflected off Exeter’s Jayden Stockley instead.

That was confirmed by the dubious goals committee on Tuesday afternoon, meaning Williams’ goal tally for the season now stands at two instead of three.

Following the full-time whistle of Town’s 2-2 draw at St James Park, Williams had said: “The goals was a dubious one but I’m happy to run off claiming it!

“It took the slightest of touches off me and it may also have touched someone else afterwards but I think if I’ve touched it, it’s a goal for me – at least that’s what I’m hoping!”

Sadly for Williams, those mean folk on the dubious goals committee thought otherwise.
