Saints hooker Hartley backed to stay on as England skipper

Eddie Jones expects Saints hooker Dylan Hartley to continue leading England despite persistent calls for his demotion as captain.

Hartley has been at the helm for successive RBS 6 Nations title conquests, but he has been repeatedly replaced during the third quarter of games.

Saracens man Jamie George has added to the mix when arriving off the bench, but Jones is standing by his skipper.

“Dylan is an outstanding captain and does a super job,” Jones said.

“There’s no reason why he won’t continue to do a super job.

“It’s like when Mike Brearley captained the England cricket team - everyone questioned him, then he won the Ashes and no-one questioned him.

“I thought he was better than he was in November - and there’s no reason why, the next time he comes in, he can’t be better than he was this time.

“As long as he keeps improving, he’s in the right direction, like every other player.”
