New boy Vasey to start at Gardens

Fly-half Richard Vasey is expected to go straight in to the Rotherham Titans team to face Northampton Saints at Franklin's Gardens after completing a loan switch from Leeds Carnegie.

The England students international played for Leeds against Rotherham last season and jumped at the chance to gain game time with the Titans after finding first team opportunities limited at Headingley.

Mike Whitehead's injury absence has allowed Jamie Blackwood, Tom Allen and Jamie Lennard to try their hand at fly-half this season but head coach Craig West was determined to recruit a specialist No.10.

"We have tried different players in that position but at this level it is important to have an out and out experienced ten," said West.

"We have an important run of fixtures and having Richard available to us will boost our back line.

"I am grateful to Stuart Lancaster for allowing Richard to join us."

Vasey made 24 appearances as Leeds pipped Rotherham to the National League One title last season and scored three penalties for England Students in last Saturday's defeat to France.

"I want to play as many games as I can for Rotherham this season and help to improve the league position," said Vasey.

Fijian international Vereneki Goneva is expected to start at centre against Saints with Dan Smith and Kevin Corrigan in line for recalls after recovering from injuries.
