Cobblers' forgotten man Yaser Kasim named in Iraq squad for Kuwait friendly

Forgotten man Yaser Kasim has been called into the Irag national squad for their friendly with Kuwait on Monday night - despite not having featured for the Cobblers first team for more than 10 months.

The former Swindon midfielder hasn’t featured for Town since the 1-0 defeat at Scunthorpe United in the FA Cup in November, last year.

Signed in the summer of 2017 by Justin Edinburgh, Kasim was regularly involved in the first team in the early weeks of the season, but once Edinburgh left he soon fell out of favour with his successor Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, and he hasn’t featured at all under Dean Austin.

Although contracted to the Cobblers until next summer, Austin has made it clear the 27-year-old doesn’t feature in his first team plans this season.

Kasim has been training with the youth team at Moulton College since returning from the summer break, but despite his lack of first team action, he has been named in the latest Iraq squad by their new manager, former Slovenia boss Srečko Katanec.

Iraq take on Kuwait in Kuwait City on Monday night, with the nation beginning their preparations for the start of the 2019 AFC Asian Cup, which kicks off in January.
