'˜Buzzing' Morias says Colchester win can be just the start for Cobblers

Two draws and two defeats from their opening four games had left Town playing catch-up with the rest of Sky Bet League Two ahead of the trip to Essex at the weekend.

But performances were generally encouraging and Dean Austin’s men finally claimed all three points when second-half goals from Matt Crooks and Billy Waters put an end to Colchester’s undefeated start to the campaign.

Town are still languishing down in 16th, far below where they hoped or expected to be this season, but Morias believes Saturday’s success can be the platform for the next nine months.

“It’s a positive win for the boys and it’s positive to get the three points,” he said afterwards.

“This has been a long-time coming and it’s been a while for us but we’ve got three points and now we can properly kick-start our season and this can be a platform for us.”

Morias was given his first league start for the Cobblers on Saturday as he partnered Kevin van Veen up front before being replaced by Andy Williams on 73 minutes.

“My time will come,” he added. “It’s a process that we’re building and working on. I’m happy to get my first start and it’s all positive and taking it step by step.

“Goals will come for me and I’m just happy the team got the three points, that’s all that matters.

“I put my body on the line for the team and we all do that as players. We’ve got to do what we’ve got to do to get the three points and I’m buzzing to get the victory.”

Morias had nothing but praise for Waters after the former Cheltenham forward scored his first goal for the club with a simple finish at the end of a well-worked team move.

“I’m buzzing for Billy to get his goal because he’s worked ever so hard and he took his chance really well, but I’m happy for the team as well,” he continued.

“It was good play from the boys and Billy tapped it away. It takes a lot to come on and focus and be willing to work hard for the team but he got the reward.

“Billy’s a goalscorer and his record shows that. He’s done it in this league before and he’s closed a lot of people’s mouths with his goal and long may it continue.

“We got the three points and we’ll go home on the bus happy and the fans will go home happy and everyone at the club is happy.”

Goalkeeper David Cornell was another key contributor to the victory with two crucial saves preserving Northampton’s 1-0 lead during the latter stages.

“It was nothing less than we deserved,” said the Welshman. “We could have been one or two ahead by half-time but it’s my job to make saves and I did that.

“The boys were brilliant I thought and that’s three points and now it’s about kicking on.”
