The Dutchman has netted 23 goals in 71 starts and 45 substitute appearances for the Iron, and in the past six weeks has been their main goal threat, scoring six times in their past 11 games, including one in last Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at Southend United.

He becomes the Cobblers’ ninth signing of a very busy January transfer windown, signing a two-and-a-half year deal.

The 26-year-old is available to make his debut in Saturday’s Sky Bet League One clash with Rochdale at Sixfields.

Van Veen began his playing career with home town club PSV Eindhoven, working his way through the academy there, before dropping into part-time football with Helmond Sport, Dijkse Boys and UDI ‘19.

A regular scorer for all of those clubs, van Veen signed for FC Oss to play in the second division of Dutch football.

He was a big hit there, scoring 16 times in 20 appearances, and that form attracted the attention of a number of English clubs, with Scunthorpe winning the race to sign him in January, 2015.

Van Veen netted 12 times last season, but then endured a tough start to the current campaign, scoring just once in his first 18 appearances as he struggled to nail down a regular place in the team.

But after being given a regular run by boss Graham Alexander, van Veen found his best form which he will now be bringing to Sixfields.

He also has scoring form at the home of the Cobblers, netting the first in Scunthorpe’s 2-1 win at Sixfields last season.
