It was a night that anybody who was lucky enough to be at Anfield will never forget.

The date: Wednesday, September 22, 2010.

The venue: Anfield, Liverpool

The occasion: Carling Cup third round match between Premier League giants Liverpool and League Two Northampton Town.

The result: One of the greatest in the Cobblers' history as they drew 2-2 and then won the penalty shootout 4-2.

It was: The night when 'that Abdul Osman, he silenced the Kop!'

A travelling army of 5,000 Town fans made the trip to the north west to see their team take on the Reds, more in hope than expectation.

The Cobblers had done brilliantly to reach this stage at all, having seen off higher level Brighton and Reading to reach the third round.

It was the club's first visit to Anfield since their only season in the top flight in 1965/66.

With rain pouring down, Liverpool took a ninth-minute lead through Serbian international Milan Jovanovic and the Cobblers fans would have feared the worst.

But they needn't have been concerned... what followed has gone down in club folklore.

Billy McKay equalised early in the second half and the match ended 1-1 after 90 minutes.

In extra-time, the unthinkable happened as Michael Jacobs fired what were a dominant Town in front, only for Liverpool to hit back with a late equaliser from David Ngog - so it was on to penalties.

They were taken at the Kop end of the ground, and although Steve Guinan missed early on for Town, it was the Reds who crumbled under the pressure.

It meant when Abdul Osman stepped up to take the Cobblers' fifth penalty, knowing if he scored then history would be made and Town would beat Liverpool.

Cool as you like, Osman sent Brad Jones the wrong way and slotted the ball into the net to seal a famous win and spark wild celebrations at the Anfield Road end of the world famous ground.
