Wilder says Cobblers are ready to '˜go again' as fixture congestion eases

Chris Wilder believes the Cobblers will now '˜go again' as their hectic run of Saturday-Tuesday fixtures has come to an end.

Saturday’s 4-1 win at Carlisle was the final game of a spell of seven fixtures in the space of just 22 days, with the Cobblers having to play rearranged postponed games at York City and Oxford United on top of their scheduled run of fixtures.

But with just one more midweek game pencilled in this season, against Crawley Town at Sixfields on April 19, Wilder will have more time to work with his players on the training ground as they play Saturday to Saturday.

The Cobblers did superbly in the seven games they played in quick succession, winning five of them and drawing two, and they are now 13 points clear at the top of Sky Bet League Two.

But, worryingly for the rest of the division, Wilder believes his team will now improve further as they get time to properly recover from games and prepare for fixtures.

Asked if he is looking forwward to having a clear week between the trip to Brunton Park and Saturday’s Sixfields date with Cambridge United, Wilder said: “Every manager, and every coaching staff will be looking at it, and will be thinking they can get the proper and correct work into the players.

“I believe we will be better for being able to do that.

“We have to get through the period we have had, we have to get through the travelling, get through the injuries, get through the suspensions, but I think once we get back to playing Saturday to Saturday we will go again and see a lift.

“When you have a spell as we just have, it is about getting through and managing the period, and I think we have done that in great fashion.”
