Cobblers forward Matty Warburton explained how the club's analyst played a big role in the wonderful free-kick he scored against AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

Town were trailing to Ethan Chislett's first-minute opener when Warburton, who won the foul in the first place, curled a 25-yard free-kick over the wall and into the top corner.

It was a fine strike from the 28-year-old and helped Cobblers to an opening-day point, but he didn't take all the credit.

"I'm delighted with it and the goal came at an important time because it got us back in the game," said Warburton afterwards.

"It was a bit of a shock to the system going 1-0 down after 20 seconds but free-kicks are something I work on regularly in terms of practising after training, making sure I get it right.

"I do a lot of free-kick taking but I also found out a little bit about what the wall does and I used that information to my advantage and I was delighted with the strike.

"The wall doesn't jump. We got that information before the goal and fair play to the analyst (Alex Latimer) because he's done his homework and he gave us that info prior to the match.

"It was one where, when I lined it up, I felt 'this is a bit of me' and I was confident. The wall wasn't particularly tall either so once I knew I could get it over them, I knew it had every chance of going in."

Three minutes later, Nesta Guinness-Walker restored Wimbledon's lead but again the Cobblers came back through Ricky Korboa's debut goal.

"That was something the gaffer was really pleased about at half-time because we showed good character after going behind so early," added Warburton.

"We kept on chipping away and we stuck to our fundamentals and I'm delighted for Ricky because he took his goal extremely well, although I'm winding him up, telling him it took a deflection!

"But I'm pleased for him. He's showing what he's capable of and he's proving worthy of his place in the team."

Warburton is also still working on his celebration GIF that the club's account tweet when he scores.

He explained: "There was a deal in place that on Thursday we would sort it and then again on Friday but the media man didn't pull up the goods!

"I've had to stick with a very basic one for now so I apologise to everyone out there."
