The 34-year-old is a huge fan of Town’s big number 10 and admires the player’s incredible work ethic.

But he also believes the former Milton Keynes Dons and Rotherham United man could be even more effective if he occasionally conserved some energy.

Revell scored his fourth goal of the season on Saturday, slotting home a late penalty in the 2-0 win over Walsall.

With skipper and penalty taker Marc Richards on the bench, Revell took over spot-kick duties from Taylor, who missed one the previous weekend against Milton Keynes.

Taylor admitted he was happy to let Revell have a go from 12 yards, and went on to outline how important the 33-year-old front man is to the team, and that he might be better easing off the throttle at times - particuarly if faced with chasing a lost cause.

“Alex was happy to step up,” said Taylor.

“Regardless of whether you score or you miss, you have to be brave enough to take the penalty and it was nice to see him get on the score sheet.

“That’s always imperative for strikers.

“They will tell you they’re not worried when they’re not scoring goals regularly but they are and it’s good for him and he deserves a lot of praise this season for the way he’s played up front on his own.

“He works tirelessly, sometimes too hard if you ask me.

“He’s been really big for us so far and he’ll be a massive player for us for the rest of the season.”

Asked to expand on his comment about Revell working too hard, Taylor added: “He’s an infectious and enthusiastic character and sometimes he runs a bit too much.

“We need him to stop chasing needless causes and conserve some of his energy.

“He’s such an honest footballer, as I am, that he just wants to run and run and run.

“He can do it but I think - and I’ve told him this as well - maybe it’ll be better to conserve his energy sometimes when he can’t win the ball.

“But he’s been excellent for us and arguably one of our best players of the season so far.”
