Striker Morton 'really excited' to help Cobblers in promotion quest after joining from West Brom

The 20-year-old will spend the rest of the season at Northampton, alongside Arsenal teenager James Olayinka, after the pair signed on Monday.

Morton scored five goals in 17 appearances for non-league Braintree Town last season but this is his first experience of league football.

“I’m really excited,” he said. “I played in the Conference last season and that’s a good level to play at and a good taste of men’s football but the Football League is where everyone wants to be.

“To come to this club on loan, hopefully I can do well and that will put me in good stead for the rest of my career.”

Asked how the move came about, he added: “I was told that they wanted me to come here on loan and it’s obviously a great opportunity for myself to come in and help the team push up the league.

“I know they’ve been doing really well in the league so it’s a bonus to come into a good group that’s winning games.

“They’re doing brilliantly in the FA Cup as well and I know they’re going to take thousands of fans to Derby – hopefully they get through in that and then I can play my part!

“I’m just looking forward to helping out the team.”

Cobblers fans saw a brief glimpse of Morton during his lively cameo off the bench against Scunthorpe United on Tuesday evening.

“I like to get in behind defences and I feel I’m really quick,” he said when asked what he'll offer the team. “I also like to link play but I think softening defences by running in behind is my main asset.

“I like to mould myself around the quicker strikers and be a nuisance for the defenders and not give them a minute by pressing them.

“I see myself as a nine really but I don’t mind whether it’s a one or a two up front, however the manager wants to play, I just like to play on the last man.

“I know what I can bring to the team and it’s an opportunity to be around a good group of players.

“Hopefully I get a chance and I’ll take it when it comes.”
