Former Cobblers striker Ivan Toney admits he will be extra motivated to net against his old club when he leads the Scunthorpe United attack against Town on Saturday (ko 3pm).

Town academy product Toney is on loan at Glanford Park from Newcastle United, the club the Cobblers sold him to in the summer of 2015.

It is his second stint with the Iron, having spent the first half of the current season at Wigan Athletic, and he has made an instant impression, scoring twice in the past three games.

He smashed home the equaliser in Scunthorpe’s 2-2 draw at Peterborough United on Tuesday night, and is now setting his sights on the Cobblers and bagging a first goal on home soil in his second spell with the Iron.

“Scoring goals is what I like to be doing, especially against a former club, so I will be excited to try and do that,” said Toney, talking to scunthorpe-united.co.uk

“I’m sure that Northampton will have a game plan and we will have a game plan so it should be a good game.

“We will be working hard on the training pitch and getting on the scoresheet at home would mean a lot.”

Toney has played the Cobblers on a handful of occasions since leaving Sixfields, including just last month for Wigan, and scored twice for Shrewsbury against them last season.

He admits he would love to net against his hometown club once more this weekend, while stressing the debt he owes to the Cobblers.

“It was a very good time there and they are a very good club,” said Toney. “Although they were in a sticky patch.

“I push myself hard in every game, but I will be trying my hardest to get a goal this weekend.”

Toney is well aware of the Cobblers’ precarious position in the league one table, but knows Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s men are capable of causing Scunthorpe problems on Saturday.

“Any club can turn it around at anytime and anyone can beat anyone,” said the 21-year-old,

“If we go with our game plan and a positive mind, then I am sure we will get the three points we want.”

Despite their lofty position in the league, Scunthorpe are on a stuttering run of form, having won just once in their past seven games.

Toney though feels things are coming together, and that they showed at London Road in midweek that they are closing in on their best form.

“I am happy to be scoring goals, but would have been even happier if we got the three points,” said the player brought up on the Eastfield estate in Northampton.

“We didn’t lose so that was the main thing.

“We will take the positives from that game and go into Saturday’s with a strong, positive mind.”
