Page not rushing into decision on trialists Sonupe and Chicksen

Sonupe, who was released by Tottenham Hotspur’s academy last month, also featured in last week’s draw with Queens Park Rangers.

Although still raw, the 20-year-old displayed exciting glimpses of what he can do on Tuesday with his pace, trickery and movement.

Page has several times admitted the need for more bodies in wide areas, but he did not give much away when asked if Sonupe would be one of those new signings.

He said: “Emmanuel has pedigree behind him having come from Tottenham, so we know there’s something in him.

“I think he gets frustrated at times because he gets into some great areas and then it’s the end product or the final pass or the end shot that needs work.

“But again we won’t rush into things. Since he’s come in he’s got a fantastic attitude and he’s been absolutely brilliant and he’s a great lad to have around the place.

“We’re just giving him that opportunity to play games.

“He’s one of those players who’s been an U21 footballer at a Premier League club and now wants to kick-start his career.”

Former Brighton and MK Dons man Chicksen started at left-back against Wolves before switching to the right at half-time, although he did suffer a wrist injury towards the end of the game.

The fact Page was willing to trial a full-back in their penultimate pre-season game prompts questions over the fitness of Brendan Moloney and Raheem Hanley, who have barely featured in pre-season, and the manager said: “Chicks is a good player.

“He can play left and right back so we’ve brought him into train and give him a couple of games.

“We won’t be making any decisions in the next 24 hours certainly. We’ll leave it a little while and see how his injury is.

“He went down with a heavily strapped wrist so we’ll make sure we do right by him and get that sorted and then hopefully make a decision in the next couple of weeks.”

Page also reiterated the need for patience with regards to signings, adding: “I sound like a stuck record but I don’t want to just bring in numbers.

“I want us to go to the next level in league one and I want us to be able to compete, so to do that we need to bring in the right personnel in with that experience and quality.”

The Cobblers play their final pre-season friendly of the summer on Saturday when they travel to National League side Eastleigh (ko 3pm).

Town begin their Sky Bet League One campaign on Saturday, August 6, when they host Fleetwood at Sixfields.
