Opposition view: Sheridan's joy after Latics reel Cobblers in with late Sixfields win

Coming into this game rejuvenated under Sheridan, who was appointed just 24 hours before Justin Edinburgh took charge at the Cobblers back in January, the Latics continued their impressive surge up the Sky Bet League One table at the expense of another relegation rival.

Tope Obadeyi swept home the breakthrough in the first-half and after John-Joe O’Toole seemingly rescued a point for Northampton, Lee Erwin snatched a potentially pivotal victory with a stoppage-time winner.

“It’s a massive win against a team just above us because it gets us a little bit closer to them,” said Sheridan afterwards.

“All we can do is take care of ourselves. If we keep winning and keep picking points up, we’ll be OK and that’s our main objective - to make sure we’re safe.

“I thought we played really well. They had one or two half chances in the first 10 minutes but once we got into the game we passed it well and we got the goal.

“I was a bit disappointed with our final ball because I thought on the break we were catching them but it was just final decisions.

“I think we’re a good team and I know I’ve got a team with a tremendous work ethic here, but I’d like us to control the game a little bit more.

“I would have been disappointing with a draw but I keep getting told strikers don’t score the goals and two strikers have scored two goals so I’m chuffed to bits.

“I’ve got to keep everyone on their toes. It’s about the 22, 23 players all thinking they’ve got a chance of playing and I’m well chuffed with the whole group and it’s them who are winning games.”
