Morton's play-off performances persuaded Rose the Cobblers is the right club for him

Callum Morton's stunning performances in the play-offs persuaded Danny Rose that the Cobblers is the right club for him to join to further his career.

The striker joined Town for an undisclosed fee from Sky Bet League Two outfit Mansfield on Friday, and he is looking forward to quickly making his mark in the claret and white.

Rose has a decent scoring record in his career, netting 66 goals in his 151 starts and 113 substitute appearances for Barsnley, Bury and the Stags, and last season he scored 12 times in 34 matches for Mansfield, before the season was brought to a premature end by the coronavirus pandemic.

But he believes he can improve those numbers, and he was impressed by what he saw from Morton in the play-offs.

The West Brom loanee netted twice in the semi-final win at Cheltenham Town and then once more against Exeter City at Wembley, and Rose is convinced that Keith Curle and the Cobblers squad played a major role in the young striker's development

"I saw how well Callum Morton did here last season," said Rose, who hasn't been involved in a match day squad at the Stags since their 4-0 Carabao Cup defeat at Preston on August 29.

"I remember watching the play offs and being really impressed with him and how the team adapted to suit his game to benefit both Callum and the team and to help get the best out of him.

"I am a slightly different type of player, I like to get in behind but I also like to think I am decent in the air too so hopefully I can help the squad here."

The 26-year-old is also excited at stepping back up to league one, and working with Cobblers boss Keith Curle.

Rose has played in the division before with Bury, and also started his career in the Championship with home town club Barnsley, and he said: "It is a great opportunity for me and a new challenge.

"I have been in league two for a few seasons and I am ambitious to play in league one, so this move gives me that opportunity and I can't wait to get started.

"This is a good club, is is a good, effective squad and I can't wait to be part of it. The club has a clear identity and I think that will suit me.

"When I was speaking to the gaffer here we spoke about that and we agreed on that and I am hoping I can chip in with a few goals to help the team."

And he added: "There are some really big clubs in league one and I am excited about some of the games we have.

"This is a very tough league and of course things will be a little different without fans but we will adjust and adapt to that and hopefully fans will be back to watch games sooner rather than later.

"I am joining a good squad and can't wait to get started and to help Northampton Town."

In his quotes about the signing of Rose, Town boss Curle said he was glad to be signing a player who 'used to annoy the life out of me when he played against me and my teams'.

As well as scoring from the penalty spot, Rose certainly rattled a few cages on his most recent performance against the Cobblers, the Stags' 2-1 win at the PTS in March, and he admits he likes to get fully involved.

"There have been a few good battles between teams I have been in and teams that Keith Curle have managed over the last few seasons and I am glad that I made an impression on him," said Rose.

"I do try to be a nuisance for defenders and make my mark on a game."
