Although X-rays revealed McCourt hadn’t broken any bones, the damage shown up in an MRI scan means the 21-year-old will have to go under the knife,

“It isn’t great news, we have spoken to the specialist who has reviewed the scan and Jak needs an operation to reduce the chances of such an injury happening again in the future,” said Cobblers boss Rob Page.

McCourt, who was only signed from Barnsley last month, suffered the injury as he landed awkwardly after making a clearing header, and Page added: “I am gutted for the lad.

“It was one of things, it wasn’t anyone’s fault, it was an impact injury and all we can do now is work with Jak to get him fit and ready as soon as possible.

“We have given him a few days off to spend with his family before he has the surgery early next week.

“He is a strong boy, a tough character, and I know he will come through this set back stronger but it is a blow for us and for Jak.”
