Kevin Wilkin has paid tribute to Glenn Walker who stands on the brink of history for Brackley Town this weekend.

Walker returned from injury in last weekend’s Emirates FA Cup first round penalty shoot-out success over Bishop’s Stortford and then featured again as the Saints claimed their first win of the Vanarama National League North campaign with a 2-0 victory at Alfreton Town on Tuesday night, thanks to goals from Tre Mitford and Shane Byrne.

The game at Alfreton saw Walker make his 350th appearance for Brackley, which equalled the club record held by Terry Muckelberg.

It means that should Walker play again at Gateshead on Saturday, he will become the club’s leading appearance holder.

Wilkin said: “Glenn has been a great servant to the club.

“He came into football a little bit late and it’s terrific that he has achieved that many games for the club, he’s very well thought of here.

“I’ve always thought he is capable of playing at a higher level. He is a great footballer and a great technician and he should really have gone on.

“But the fact he hasn’t has been to Brackley’s benefit because he has been a fantastic and consistent performer over a long period of time.

“It’s been great to have him back in the side and hopefully he stays there.”

Wilkin, meanwhile, was delighted to see his team claim their first win of the league season in midweek which came after Brackley had been handed a trip to Sky Bet League Two side Tranmere Rovers in Monday’s draw for the second round of the FA Cup.

But he knows his team are in for another stern test in the north-east this weekend as they take on a Gateshead side who beat them on penalties in the National League North play-off eliminator in July.

“It’s been a good week but we want it to continue and Gateshead is a tough place to go,” Wilkin added.

“There is very little atmosphere there with the running track round the pitch and it’s a bit of a strange stadium to play in.

“They are finding their feet and had a good win on Tuesday night so it will be an interesting day and hopefully we will be able to give them a good game.”
