It's been an excellent day for the Cobblers - despite not playing - after several of their promotion rivals suffered setbacks.

In fact, despite eight of the top 10 in action, Cobblers retained their position in sixth place in Sky Bet League Two.

The big result of the day involved seventh-placed Bradford City who were easily beaten 3-0 at out-of-form Mansfield Town, for whom Danny Rose, Nick Maynard and Andy Cook all scored.

Exeter and Colchester, in second and fifth respectively, could not be separated in a goalless draw at St James Park while leaders Swindon Town were 3-0 winners over Port Vale.

Former Cobbler Kevin van Veen helped his old side out by scoring and assisting for Scunthorpe United as they drew 2-2 at home to another promotion-chasing side in Crewe Alexandra.

Forest Green also suffered defeat, conceding two late goals in a 2-1 loss at Macclesfield Town, while Newport County, who are 11th but have games in hand, went down 2-1 to Leyton Orient.

Plymouth Argyle took advantage of those slip-ups by moving into the automatic promotion spots with a 2-1 win over struggling Stevenage.

There were also wins for Crawley Town and Carlisle United over Grimsby and Walsall respectively. The final two games both ended 1-1 between Morecambe and Cambridge and Salford and Oldham.

It all means Cobblers remain well-placed in sixth position with a game in hand over several teams around them.
