FA CUP DRAW: Cobblers face Wycombe trip if they can see off Stourbridge

The Cobblers have been handed a trip to Sky Bet League Two side Wycombe Wanderers in the third round of the FA Cup, if they can overcome Stourbridge in their second round clash.

Both Town and Stourbridge were in the hat after their game on Sunday was postponed, and they now know what reward awaits the winners when the match is scheduled to be played next Tuesday (Dec 13)

The draw was shown live on BBC2 and BTSport, with former Liverpool and England captain Steven Gerrard drawing the home teams and former Arsenal and England striker Ian Wright the away teams.

Wycombe are currently in the play-off places in league two, and were 3-0 winners at Sixfields earlier this season in the Checkatrade Trophy.

The Cobblers’ second round tie at Stourbridge on Sunday was called off less than two hours before kick-off due to a frozen pitch.

The two sides are scheduled to try again at the non-League side’s War Memorial Athletic Ground next Tuesday with a 7.45pm kick-off.

The decision by referee Andy Davies to call the game off left everybody connected with the Cobblers frustrated, from manager Rob Page and the players down to the hundreds of Cobblers supporters that had travelled to the west midlands for the game, with many of them suggesting Stourbridge should have made more of an effort to combat the freezing weather that had been forecast.

Stourbridge boss Gary Hackett said he was ‘devastated’ at the decision, and suggested it was the referee’s decision alone to make such a late call.

“I’m devastated to be honest,” he said. “It’s such a big anti-climax. The excitement of it, full crowd, all the preparation, TV cameras and suddenly we’re told the game’s off. It’s a real downer.

“The referee is there to make a decision, whether I agree or disagree.

“Ten or 15 years ago it would have been played but with the PC brigade of today you’re not allowed to risk it.

“I understand why he’s made the decision.

“It was maybe a bit late, who knows? In hindsight he should have maybe got here earlier but it’s a tough job to do, being a referee, so I don’t think we should be pointing fingers anywhere.”
