Veteran striker David Nugent says he has spoken to Keith Curle about the possibility of joining the Cobblers this summer.

The 35-year-old, who earned his only England cap in 2007, scoring in a 3-0 win over Andorra, made 24 Championship appearances for Preston North End last season, scoring one goal.

"I've spoken to Keith Curle at Northampton," Nugent told TalkSPORT. "I had a really good conversation with him.

"That would a good location for me and Keith told me his plans for the season, but hopefully I'll have a chat with a few other clubs and then I'll decide."

Preston boss Alex Neil will allow Nugent to leave the club this summer, saying: "Nuge has reached a stage in his career where he needs to be playing week in, week out and unfortunately at the moment we can't guarantee him that.

"So if something comes up for Nuge which works well for him, then it will certainly be something he could look at.

"Obviously Nuge was a part of the squad last season and in certain games, he did well.

"In terms of goals, I think he would probably agree that he would have liked to have scored more, but it's just one of those where he will want more regular football and we can't provide that."

Nugent has an impressive CV having also played for Portsmouth, Burnley, Leicester City, Middlesbrough and Derby County.
