John-Joe O’Toole has vowed to repay the Cobblers supporters for the backing they showed the player on his nightmare day at Mansfield.

Fans who travelled to Field Mill on Saturday wore wigs and headbands as a tribute to O’Toole, who had been a key player in the team’s five-game winning streak and excellent start to 2015.

The good form came after a poor start to his Northampton career but ended abruptly at Mansfield when he was dismissed for violent conduct after 32 minutes.

O’Toole will now serve a three-game suspension but has promised to come back stronger after his time out of the team.

He wrote on Twitter: “Massive thanks for all the support saturday, especially those who wore wigs and headbands, it is truly appreciated!

“Ufortunately it just wasn’t meant to be. possibly shouldn’t have reacted the way I did once provoked. Big thanks and will try my hardest to repay the support.”
