Cobblers boss Chris Wilder is confident of securing the services of left-back Tom Newey and winger Ricky Holmes on a permanent basis after making contract offers to the pair.
Holmes is coming towards the end of his loan spell from Portsmouth, which expires after Saturday’s trip to Accrington, while Newey is a free agent after his contract at Oxford United was terminated on Monday.
Offers have been made to both as Wilder continues to restructure his Sixfields squad, and both could be signed and sealed before the weekend game.
“I don’t think there’s any secret that Ricky sees his future away from Portsmouth and sees his future with us,” said Wilder.
“We’re trying ever so hard to make that happen and we’re close. All three parties have to agree to it but Ricky has had a change of scenery and he’s enjoying his football.
“He wants to stop, he’s told me that and he’s told you that, and he sees his future away from Fratton Park so hopefully that’s one we can sort out before the weekend.”
Newey made three appearances on loan for the Cobblers in November, a spell which was cut short by an ankle injury suffered in the 2-1 defeat at Cambridge United.
Having worked with the player at Oxford, Wilder was always keen to take him to Sixfields.
“We’ve made an offer to Tom and we’d like to get him in the building,” he said. “Evan Horwood has done exceptionally well and we’ve needed a replacement for Gregor (Robertson).
“If we’re being honest we’ve had our eye on Tom for a while and hopefully we can get that one over the line and get him on board until the end of the season.”
