Lewis Hornby and Evan Horwood have rejoined training with the first-team squad at the Cobblers this week.
Both have been sidelined with tendon issues – left-back Horwood since August and central-midfielder Hornby since more than a year before that but both have recovered after a period training with the youth team.
Central defender Zander Diamond has made excellent progress but is unlikely to be fit for the game at Southend on Saturday, although utility forward Lawson D’Ath could be passed fit after recovering from an ankle injury.
Initial scans on Ryan Cresswell’s knee injury have proved inconclusive but he will certainly miss the game against former club Southend, with Kelvin Langmead deputising in the back four again.
Ian Morris continues his rehabilitation from a dislocated knee and Tom Newey remains out with ankle ligament damage.
Chesterfield midfielder, signed on loan on Thursday, will come into the reckoning while John-Joe O’Toole is expected to be among the substitutes for Southend, who he joined on loan in the week.
