Cobblers have opted to recall John-Joe O’Toole from his loan spell at Sky Bet League Two rivals Southend United.

The midfield man, who moved to Northampton from Bristol Rovers during the summer, made just two appearances for Southend, including one against his parent club.

He was due to remain at Roots Hall until January 24, but Cobblers have decided to bring him back into the fold after seeing Ollie Banks recalled by Chesterfield.

And manager Chris Wilder is hoping O’Toole, who has played 20 games for Cobblers this season, can make an impact during the busy festive period.

“We have a busy weekend coming up with two games in three days and of course Ollie Banks has gone back to Chesterfield,” said Wilder, whose side host Bury on Boxing Day before travelling to Tranmere Rovers two days later.

“We are entering a critical part of the season and I want to have as many options available as possible, so we have recalled John-Joe.

“John-Joe has spent a month at Southend and hopefully he will come back ready to kick on.”
