The Cobblers have moved quickly to replace John Marquis with the loan signing of Huddersfield Town forward Cristian Lopez until the end of the season.

Marquis was on Thursday recalled from his Sixfields loan deal by his parent club Millwall, leaving Town a little short on attacking options.

But Cobblers boss Chris Wilder has moved quickly to fill the void left by Marquis’s departure, and has snapped up 24-year-old Spaniard Lopez.

The 6ft 1in frontman arrived in English football last July, having had spells with Real Madrid B and Valencia B, as well as CD Atlético Baleares.

Last October Lopez had a loan spell with Shrewsbury Town, scoring once in five appearances for the Shrews before being recalled by his parent club.

He has yet to make a start for Huddersfield, but has made four substitute appearances for the Terriers this season, the most recent of which was in a 3-2 FA Cup win at Grimsby Town on January 4.

Lopez has also made two substitute appearances in the SkyBet Championship, and one in the Capital One League Cup.

Lopez began his career in 2008 in the Spanish third tier with his local club Alicante, before moving to play for Real Madrid’s B team, known as Real Madrid Castilla, in 2009.

He spent two seasons with Castilla, scoring 10 goals in 44 league starts, before switching to play for Valencia’s B team, known as Mestalla, in the fourth tier of Spanish football.

Lopez enjoyed his time in Valencia, scoring 22 goals for the club, and helping them to promotion to the Spanish third division.

In 2012 he moved again, this time to Club Deportivo Atlético Baleares, again in the Spanish third division, scoring nine goals in 35 appearances.

Last summer he decided to try his luck in England, and signed for Huddersfield Town after a trial spell.

At the time of his signing, Terriers boss Mark Robins said: “Cristian has showed in just a short space of time his raw ability

“He hasn’t had a pre-season, so we will need to get him up to speed before we can get the best out of him.”

Lopez is now on loan at the Cobblers, and goes straight into the squad for Saturday’s SkyBet League Two clash with Mansfield Town at Sixfields (ko 3pm).

Lopez has been given the squad number 10, and the name on the back of his shirt will be Cristian.

Meanwhile, Cobblers striker JJ Hooper has joined Skrill South side Farnborough on loan until the end of the season.

The former Newcastle United front man arrived at Sixfields last summer and has made one start and four substitute appearances.
