Zander Diamond has become the Cobblers’ first permanent signing of the close season, joining on a three-year contract from Burton Albion.

The Scottish centre-back made 14 appearances on loan from the Brewers during the club’s successful battle against relegation out of the Football League, scoring one goal.

His recruitment was cited by many supporters as being a key part in the bid to beat the drop, and the club have now recruited him on a permanent basis.

“It’s excellent news for the football club,” said manager Chris Wilder. “Everyone has been impressed with his attitude and his play and he’s been very good for me ever since he walked through the door.

“He’s had his issues at his other club but the slate is clean here. We’re delighted that he’s joining us for what we hope will be a successful season.”

The signing of Diamond is likely to complete the club’s recruitment in central defence, with Kelvin Langmead already under contract next season, talks planned with Mathias Doumbe and a contract offered to Gregor Robertson.

Wilder also has Ben Tozer and Lee Collins available in that area, and is delighted with his options.

“It needs to be competitive,” he said. “There are loads of boxes you need to tick if you’re going to be successful and he brings us a lot of the things that are on our wish list.

“Zander coming in will certainly provide competition in that key area. It is important we get the spine of the team right and bring in people who want to put their bodies in front of things.”
