Cobblers chairman Kelvin Thomas has provided fans with a positive update regarding the unfinished East Stand redevelopment, revealing he has held ‘good discussions’ with Northampton Borough Council and is ‘happy’ with how it’s progressing.

Plans to develop the problematic East Stand have been hit by constant delays ever since Thomas became chairman over three years ago, and so great was his frustration that the board felt forced to ‘open to a discussion’ about selling their controlling share in the club back in May of this year.

We’ll make sure we do the best job we can, like with anything else. It’s a serious thing and we’ve got to make sure we get it right. I’m pleased with the progress we’re making.

But finally it appears they are making some headway with Thomas delivering a positive update this week, saying: “We’re in really good conversation with the council and we’re happy and pleased with how it’s progressing.

“We’ve said all along that it’s a frustrating process and it’s taken a lot longer than we would ever have thought but unfortunately for us the fans’ clock started ticking as soon as we took over.

“We understand and respect that but in reality the council cabinet papers acknowledged that there’s been a problem all the time and it’s only recently that it got approved to fix.

“We’re in good discussions with the council about how we fix it in terms of the wider development and using all the land for the benefit of the football club.

“The frustration for us is that we do take criticism for it but we can’t do anything apart from work in the background. We’re not going make promises and I’ve always said we won’t do that.

“We’ll make sure we do the best job we can, like with anything else. It’s a serious thing and we’ve got to make sure we get it right. I’m pleased with the progress we’re making.”

Away from the saga of the East Stand, Thomas is delighted with how the club in general are progressing.

He added: “The club itself is going fro strength to strength. It’s a hard-working club and we’re getting some real good success in certain areas.

“Earlier in the season the first-team were losing matches and some people thought it was the end of the world for the club, but that’s not the case and nothing’s changed in the background.

“Everyone is working hard and now we’ve put some results together. Good things are going on behind the scenes and the academy is a prime example of that.”
