Adams: Wigan win is 'massive' for Cobblers

Nicky Adams admitted Saturday's hard-earned 3-2 victory over Wigan Athletic was a 'massive win' for the Cobblers.

Town are only 10 games into the season but had lost six of their previous seven in the league and needed a positive result against the equally out-of-form Latics.

They just about managed that thanks to goals from Ryan Watson, Sam Hoskins and Caleb Chukwuemeka.

"It's a massive win for us," said Adams. "Wigan had a few injuries but they still have some really good players and we knew it would be tough.

"I thought the lads were excellent from minute one. We've tried to take the positives out of the last few games because we played really well against Swindon and we were the much better team in the first-half against Charlton.

"We were really good in spells against Portsmouth as well but we've been punished for mistakes and conceding goals at the wrong time, and we need to learn.

"We focused on trying to putting all the positives together and all the good play. The gaffer and his staff have showed us the positive bits of what we've been doing.

"We've played some really good teams so we've said not to get too disappointed because we're a good team. We're brand new after losing a lot of players in the summer and it can be tough to rebuild, especially in this division because it's relentless and there are so many big clubs.

"Wigan, Charlton and Portsmouth are massive clubs so we've got to keep believing in what we're trying to do. I thought we were excellent."

Adams was involved in the first and third goals on his 600th career appearance before being replaced by Mark Marshall on 66 minutes.

"We've been excellent in patches so we just need to put it together but it was a big positive to see the game out," he added. "I thought we had it won when I came off at 3-1 but it's never over and they could have nicked one when they hit the post.

"It was a bit nervy towards the end but that comes with more experience and game management. When you haven't won in a while, it can be a bit nervy and they have some good players."

"But we probably should have put the game to bed before that. We've just got to keep learning on the training pitch and keep trying to be better."
