And he is desperate for them to win their tough opening fixture at Trent Bridge as they look to get off to a good start this time round.

Northants will head to Nottinghamshire on Monday (start time 2pm), hoping to take the momentum earned from three successive NatWest T20 Blast wins into the Royal London One-Day Cup.

The Steelbacks narrowly missed out on the quarter-finals in the 50-over format last season, and Wakely knows they need a good start this year.

“It’s a competition we haven’t done ourselves justice in,” said the skipper.

“We have got a very good team for 50 overs and it will be a similar line-up (to in the T20 competition).

“We’ve got a tough start, against Notts, and we’ve never done ourselves justice at Trent Bridge.

“It would be nice to beat them and then we’d have some real confidence going into this tournament.

“If we can start well, it will give us a lot of belief going forward in the tournament.”
