Murphy effort not enough as Steelbacks are beaten by Barbados

A battling effort from David Murphy wasn't enough to stop Northants falling to a seven-wicket defeat against a Barbados Select XI at the Kensington Oval on Wednesday.

The Steelbacks took on their hosts in a 50-over match, but a disappointing batting effort saw Alex Wakely’s team dismissed for just 151 in 41 overs.

Murphy did his best to push his side to a more challenging total as he hit 43 from 64 balls, but support wasn’t forthcoming.

A frustration for Northants coach David Ripley is that the likes of Wakely (20), Steven Crook (19), Saif Zaib (17) and Olly Stone (17) all made starts, but then didn’t capitalise.

The County were given early hope as Barbados got their reply underway, with seamer Ben Sanderson claiming a wicket with the eighth ball of the innings, but the home side eased to victory at 158 for three with more than 21 overs to spare.

The Steelbacks’ other wicket takers were Richard Gleeson and Zaib.

The Northants players were back in training today, before taking on Nottinghamshire in a two-day game on Friday.
