BOWLS: County Over-60s claim crucial win in national competition

Northants Over-60s were 119-98 winners over Warwickshire in the national inter-county competition.

This competition is played by six rinks for each county, with three playing at home and three playing away, and overall the County had four winning rinks, one drawn, with just one losing by only five shots.

The home rinks played at Wellingborough BC and the away rinks at Avon Valley IBC in Lighthorne.

At Wellingborough, the contest was evenly fought with very few shots between the three rinks.

The County had the edge by a few shots, but Warwickshire kept close and at one point near to the end they had drawn level, but the last end was good for the County in taking the win at home by four shots.

At Avon Valley, the County were always in control, and after five ends had a good lead by 12 shots. This lead was undiminished for the rest of the match, with a final advantage of 17 shots.

The win puts Northants into the quarter-finals where they will play Norfolk IBA on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at a neutral venue.

Ladies suffer a heavy loss to Leicestershire

NORTHANTS Ladies travelled to Melton & District to take on Leicestershire in the Midland Counties competition, and suffered a heavy 161-87 defeat.

The County lost all six rinks on a day to forget.

NORTHANTS Ladies took on Kingsthorpe Ladies in a friendly and suffered a 92-82 defeat.

It was an 18 ends match, and despite having just one winning rink, the County only lost the match by 10 shots.

That winning rink, skipped by Brenda Bishop, won by 14 shots, and was the highest scoring of all rinks.

It was an eight rink match and the visitors found the home team a bit too strong, but did manage three winning rinks.

The Police did manage one winning rink, that skipped by Tim Robinson, which beat a rink skipped by regular County skip John Haines, by two shots.
