Zimwomen raise the roof with Stricly event at The Deco in Northampton

A Strictly Come Dancing style event raised the roof...and money for a charity in Northampton and helping disadvantaged children in Africa.

The event, held at The Deco, was organised by Zimwomen, a group in Northampton that aims to empower local women, young people and children to build stronger, safer lives in thecommunity.

The money raised will be donated to Lowdown in Northampton and a campaign to build skill centres across Africa for young children.

A spokeswoman for the group said: "We empower and support vulnerable women, young people and children for a better today and tomorrow.

"We aim to improve and enhance the lives of vulnerable women, young people and children living in Northamptonshire.

"We particularly focus on education and re-employment, health and personal well-being by providing training, skills nurturing and development and through sports and recreational activities.

"We create a platform for discussions among women and young people of all cultures on issues that affect their welfare," she added.

"Our support and training helps the women we have worked with rebuild their self confidence and return to work after long-term unemployment.

"We offer hand-skills training to create goods from which they can earn a living such as fabrics, jewellery etc.

"We have introduced young people to sports and vegetable growing, providing stimulating interests and skills that helps keep them 'off the streets'. We also offer help to vulnerable families in response to Police and agency referrals.

"Our work gives hope to women and their families when they are in crisis. We help them get back on the right track by empowering them with new skills and opportunities to find work to support themselves and their families," he added.
