The air was filled with the festive scent of gingerbread, as Northampton North MP, Michael Ellis and town councillors, Jonathan Nunn and Stephen Hibbert came to visit the grotto.

Located on the Upper Mall during the run-up to Christmas, the grotto offers families and friends the opportunity to have their picture taken with Santa, surrounded by Santa’s edible grotto, made of over 3,000 gingerbread tiles, royal icing and marshmallow icicles. The world’s first edible Santa’s Grotto is now open until December 24, 2016 and tickets are £4 per child. Booking online is advisable.

Mr Ellis said: “I was thrilled to be invited by the Weston Favell Shopping Centre to the world’s first edible gingerbread grotto, where Santa has now begun making appearances!

"The entire structure housing Santa has very cleverly been made of edible products, including roof and wall tiles made of gingerbread and icicles made of marshmallow! As someone with a very sweet tooth, I was very pleased to kick off the Christmas season and was very impressed with the high level of detail and craftsmanship in creating the edible grotto.”

Centre manager Kevin Legg said: “The parade was just as fantastic as always; we were all blown away by the marching band, who really made themselves known, playing their Christmas tunes throughout the centre.

"Each year the parade proves to be a wonderful family event loved by our shoppers and staff. With our edible Santa’s Grotto too, Christmas has well and truly arrived here at Weston Favell.”
