Work on the county’s newest river side marina on the River Nene will get under way today.
The contract to develop the marina has been awarded to national marine expert Land and Water, which is due to complete the development within just 18 weeks from the start date.
The completion date of the end of October will give boaters the opportunity to moor their boats at the new facility in time for the winter.
Planning permission for the development of White Mills Marina on the River Nene at Earls Barton was granted to farmers John and Debbie Skinner last September, and now the pair are looking forward to the start of their new venture and welcoming boaters this autumn.
Mr Skinner said: “We feel incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to create a much-needed purpose-built facility on such a beautiful river as the River Nene.
“Land and Water have a proven track record for developing first class marinas, so we know they will create something really special.”
White Mills Marina will be able to accommodate cruisers, narrow boats and wide beam boats and will include:
-Floating pontoons named after notable former villagers
-Electricity and water direct to all berths
-Ladies and gents toilets and showers
-Diesel, gas and pump out
-Elsan disposal facilities
-Coal and wood
-Facilities building including lounge coffee shop and small chandlery.
The Land and Water Group owns and operates marinas in the UK.
Its Caen Hill facility won The Yacht Harbour Association Ltd’s Marina of the Year Award in 2014 along with the runner up award in 2015.
The company fully understands the strategic importance of the White Mills site on the River Nene with its excellent access to the A45 and the opportunity it represents to give the river and its users the facilities they need and deserve.
Business development manager at Land and Water Jayne Hornsby said: “We are absolutely thrilled to be part of the delivery team for White Mills Marina.
“John and Debbie Skinner clearly believe in the project 100 per cent.
“For them it is not just a marina they are creating but a legacy that will provide the area with a much needed service and leisure facility.”
The development has been welcomed by residents of Earls Barton, a short walk from White Mills Marina.
Parish council chairman Martin Cahill said: “We are looking forward to the opening of White Mills Marina.
“It promises to be a terrific facility that will benefit Earls Barton and we will all be watching its progress with great enthusiasm over the coming weeks.”
